Consultant: Making Middletown neighborhood historic could be ‘powerful tool’ for new life

A consultant told the Middletown City Council that if the Oakland neighborhood is designated a historic district, it could become “a powerful tool” for the city’s economic growth. Dan Barton of Brainwave Historic Preservation Consulting said the Oakland area has “fallen on hard times,” but he believes with the right plan and execution, its success can mirror Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati and the Oregon District in Dayton. A steel company and a city: How Armco and Middletown grew together

Since its beginnings in 1899, the success and fortunes of the company now known as AK Steel and Middletown have been largely intertwined. When George M. Verity founded the American Rolling Mill Co., better known as Armco Steel, Middletown was already flourishing with several paper companies and a tobacco company, said Sam Ashworth, local historian and former Armco Steel employee who worked there from 1964 to 1979. The federal government’s Opportunity Zone program is beginning to gather investments in operating companies in markets across the United States. Opportunity Zones are a federal government program that provides capital gains tax relief for taxpayers who invest in real estate or qualified companies in one of 8700 certified sites in all fifty states and US territories.
